The Snuts – Scala, London – 22/10/2019

“I don’t know if you can understand a word that I’m saying, but we’re The Snuts.”

What more can you say about this band? A four-piece from Glasgow, Scotland. The Snuts put on more than a show, they put themselves on the map selling out Scala on a Tuesday night.

Corella was the support act and they put on a ‘what is required from the support band’ performance as they were itching to get off stage and watch these four lads take on the London crowd.

Beginning with ‘All Your Friends’ a lost record from Arctic Monkeys’ ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’ album. A lively tune to get the crowd straight on their side and bouncing around.

Mosh-pits made an early appearance, while the odd Scotland flag was spotted in the crowd with relevance as The Snuts followed up with ‘Glasgow’.

One of their first tunes which brought delight to the travelling Glaswegian locals. A song that has so many home-grown references I thought Gerry Cinnamon was going to make an appearance.

After the craziness died down, the band got into it. Playing ‘Matador’, their summer vibe tune ‘Maybe California’ and ‘Seasons’.

‘Seasons’ is where you witnessed the vocal range of the rhythm guitarist, with a lovely melodic lead guitar in the background for the chorus. Muy bien.

‘Manhattan Project’ ended the first stint of their gig, a revelation into a combination of Catfish and the Bottlemen and “I feel like a fighter jet” lyrics.
The rough and ready style hit home to the early days of indie, whilst throwing in combinations of fighter jets.

The Snuts were entering the last scene and the setlist was diminishing, but that was no problem for this lot. “I’ll sing what I want”. Well, that gets an approved thumbs up from me-

Safe to say, it kept me quiet. Everyone was singing along as the right amount of Red Stripe had been distributed.

A good old sing-song and quite an intriguing gig. They have a solid foundation about them; mixing in your early indie memories with a glimmer of what the future holds for this genre.

They will be back again on the stage soon enough, playing a couple more gigs in late 2020. Not to forget, their release of ‘Mixtape EP’ which you can listen to in the link below.

Overall, purchase a ticket to watch these guys. The smaller the venue, the better.
