Viagra Boys – ‘Common Sense EP’ review: That was some trip

You may have heard of Viagra Boys, and it is not from one of those late-night commericals.

The Scandinavian rock outfit shot onto the scene in 2018 with the release of their debut album ‘Street Worms’, with notable tracks ‘Sports’, and ‘Just Like You’.

From there, they have toured Europe playing slots at Mad Cool Festival and End of the Road Festival, and will be touring the UK once again in Autumn.

Also, did I mention they make great music videos?…

Now, Viagra Boys are back with their new EP called ‘Common Sense’ which was released on March 6.

Opening with the EP title track, it is gives you feel of a song with more about it, but take nothing away from elements that throwback to the first album. This is the start of the trip.

Emotions of the song go back to having that voice in your head at the start of the night before realising your wrong-doings, with the lyrics covering all the aspects we have experienced after a big night out. It hits home.

“Why don’t you listen when they tell you to do right? Why do you wake up in a cold sweat every night?”
The Saxophone in the back with the edgy Stone Roses bassline mixes well, while the synth brings in a great 80s vibes.

‘Lick the Bag’ follows on carrying further influences from ‘Street Worms’.
Its straight into it with your distorted guitar, as we follow on from not listening to common sense at the start of the night.

“And if you’re feeling down, you can lick the bag.”

Viagra Boys’ lyrics have always been an aspect I have enjoyed about this outfit. They accompany the dark lyrics and imagery with a catchy instrumental, and that follows on here. Also, the killer Saxophone skills throughout.

‘Sentinel Island’ follows the licking of the bag.

The build-up into another grand bassline before the lyrics take hold of the tune. “I’m floating down the river, in my rubber canoe. I’ll buy two chicken dinners, that’s for Jesus and his crew.”

You have the continuing aggressive vibes, but it falls into the easy listening category as this band always produce this well. Strongest track on the EP.

The last song we tune into is ‘Blue’, which follows on as downer on the record with us floating back to reality.

This is not a song you would associate with this group, but the experimenting factor needs to be mentioned in this transition and a chance has been taken.

Viagra Boys mentioned the EP is a taster of more to come, and from the results I am looking forward to what lies ahead.

We will have to wait to see what else they bring out in 2020 and whether elements of ‘Street Worms’ will continue for the foreseeable future.

I mean it works, but just how far can they go with it?
